Description
The B Kurd is a 9+1 note scale with the Middle-Eastern vibes to it. Being named in honor of Kurdish music culture, the B Kurd recreates the tradition of dramatic and nostalgic melodies that were performed by the bards who traveled between the villages.
The additional note provides a big room for improvisation. That’s what makes it a very desired scale for experienced musicians.
The B Kurd has a minor voice and amazing cadence of the songs you create with this drum. The B Kurd is great for composing melancholic ethnic songs as well as scary and romantic music.
It works perfectly with many RAV Vasts and a whole number of other musical instruments. Thus, if you want to take part in a jam session, this is the right scale to choose.
The B Kurd is a scale with an ethnic feel that provides melancholic and elegiac mood. This scale was inspired by Kurdish music. The tradition involved the creation of "long" dramatic and nostalgic songs that were sung while returning to summer pastures along mountain paths. And still the B Kurd RAV Vast is not too moody and dark. This tongue drum made of special steel represents a unique balance between light and darkness.
It’s a diatonic minor scale with an extra note on the top (two steel tongues are cut out within the same area). The bass note is tuned in B2 and the tongues are tuned in 3rd and 4th octave. The B Kurd is tuned in B minor, however, you can also get the D major scale when playing this drum enjoying a great versatility of this scale.
The B Kurd embodies the B Celtic scale with an extra half-step on the bottom (F#3-G3). So the B Kurd is actually the B Celtic scale except for the second note which turns it to the B Kurd and changes the sound completely.
The B Kurd has two half-tones (F#3-G3, C#4-D4). There’s a lot of chords available on this scale. There are many dyads and triads you can experiment with. However, some players can find the minor sounding notes to be difficult to incorporate into playing, so keep it in mind when choosing and which steel tongue drum you want to buy online.
For whom this scale will work
The B Kurd is a scale designed for advanced players. However, if you are a beginner who feels the strong connection with this scale and are ready to delve into learning the techniques, you can take the B Kurd. As for beginner, it will be a little bit trickier than the D Major or B RUS, nonetheless, it’s a great scale to get motivated to learn.
The B Kurd is a great overall scale for experienced players. It’s the scale you would not get tired of quickly. The additional note provides a bigger room for improvisation. It’s a great drum for song building and still can be used for meditation since it belongs to the minor scale group.
If you feel like you can move to another mastery level of playing the steel tongue/hand drums, the B Kurd will provide you with an opportunity with a greater range of notes.
It’s a perfect scale if you are planning to perform together with other musicians. It can easily be paired by a good number of musical instruments. The B Kurd pairs perfectly with a whole bunch of the RAV drums including the B Celtic Minor, B Celtic Double Ding, B RUS, D Major and another B Kurd. It will also sound good to be accompanied by the E Low Pygmy, B Arabian Night and the B Onoleo.

I bought a B Kurd and a D major. They received within a week, from Estonia to the Netherlands. I am a layman with these kind of instruments. I have tried both now for some time. It is very easy to play. Even for children. Or children with specific needs. The sound is wunderfull. And playing with sticks with wool top they sound amazing deep and long tones. It is very reaxing. I am very happy with them. And of course i recommend this instrument.

Their service is really great! I got the answers to all the questions (and I had a LOT of them) and the CS team explained to me everything I wanted to know. Incredible drum as well! I’ve been looking for an easy-to deal-with scale that will give me more musical options. The Arabian Night seemed too specific and complicated to me and I still wanted to have the drum with those exotic vibes. So I was recommended to take the B Kurd and never regret it! The drum is so amazing! It’s marked as a scale for medium-leveled musicians, but I decided to take a risk of choosing it to be my first tongue drum. Now as I am learning the patterns and techniques. I am thinking about taking the D Major next to pair it! |

We have 3 vasts and this is my favorite. I love the scale. It’s lovely for making dyads or melodies. I love the double ding which gives just a little extra reach to a melody. I’m able to play many different melodies easily on this scale. I can play Tibetan melodies on this vast or improvise very easily. They are all wonderful instruments but this one just aligns with my heart’s song. We’re so very pleased with all of our Rav vasts, the tones, scales and craftsmanship are excellent.

This scale is my first RAV vast. As well described in the official review, it's a scale you can begin with and progress but the G3 key is sometimes tricky to put into improvisation, but once you understand how it's works, it give you a beautiful and mystical oriental vibe. The 6 uppers keys + the ding (the central one) are really easy to mash up together and give you occidental melodies. In my opinion it's a very versatil scale that's allows you to play both oriental melodies and occidental ones. I trully love it. Finally I'm leaning to play it fast and percussively but also in a relaxing/meditative way, and it match in both style !
Now let me tell you a story : I received my RAV vast in the beginning of May 2020. After a couple of day of playing, i've noticed a strange harmonic. I've sent a video to the rav team. They quickly answered me that the drum needed to be repaired. I've sent it back to them and they payed the shipping cost. Then few times passed and they told me that the drum has been damaged during transport.... and it couldn't be repaired. So they've sent me back a whole new RAV B Kurd perfectly tuned ! RAV a brand you can trust ! :D 5 stars for the instrument 5 stars for the customer service |

Brilliant instrument! The quality and attention to detail is superb. The scale itself is beautiful with both * and light aspects to it, and a bigger variety of notes than most other scales. I also have a handpan and this RAV easily rivals it in sound.

The B Kurd spoke to me. I am born Kurd so it was an obvious choice. I don't have to B Kurd, I am Kurd:). National shennanigans aside, it doesn't exactly take me to the Middle east whilst playing. It does however create a beautiful atmosphere, very music-therapy-like. It is very different from any other instrument I have encountered during my decade of playing instruments. I have still much to explore and learn with this crazy metal drum. Highly recommended. :)

These drums sound great, they can produce both clear volume and subtle dynamics with ease. the B kurd scale is nice you can find some minor 9 * in there is you zig zag around, you can find an arabian dissonance with a different zigzag but there is also a lot of uplifting almost carribean chords available too. I love it! I willprobablly purchase another scale in a year or so :) i want more!

I received the B Kurd Rav yesterday. Within 24 hours I was able to play very pleasing tunes. I am a beginner, yet was surprised at the beautiful melodies I could create. This drum seems to be doing all the work for me!!!!
Also, I can't say enough good things about the staff/team. They certainly kept me informed as to shipping time. And, they are eager to supply a person with every manner of help in learning to play their drums. My B Kurd Rav looks like a museum-worthy piece of art. This Company is everything a business SHOULD be. |

Both the looks and the music that the instrument possess is mesmerizing, just like all RAV Vast scales.
I personally chose this scale because it offers the greatest diversity both in number of tones and tonal structure. It allows you to play free-style and meditation-wise but it also contains a great base of chords and progressions for more standard song-like melodies. One can also manage to create a lot of song covers on this scale. On the technical side, the RAV Vast support team were excellent for communication and the item arrived in quite fast. All in all, if you are looking for that one RAV instrument which will be both a challenge and pleasure, I highly recommend the B Kurd. |
