Description
If you are searching for versatility, you came up for the right scale. The drum’s name speaks for itself as RUS is the abbreviation for “RAV Universal Scale”.
Just like salted caramel, it combines 2 tastes in one, as you can play in both major and minor tonalities. The Ding is tuned in B, however, it provides you an opportunity to play in B minor, D major, F# minor and A major. By simply switching the root note, you can get a completely new melody as if you changed the instrument.
How does the B RUS go with other instruments? There’s no question, why the B RUS gets immediately into a shortlist of both beginners and professional musicians. The scale is easy to deal with, that’s why it will is perfect to become your first drum. The pros love it because it can be both played solo or accompany the piano or guitar as well as the other RAV Vasts. The B RUS also is also great if you want to create the compositions that involve singing.
You’d like to get a multi-purpose hand drum? Choose the B RUS scale if you want to get the classic sound of the western music culture without ethnic tones. Among all the other RAV Vasts the B RUS has its special place as it’s ultimately versatile. It lets you create various types of music and will be especially suitable if you are keen on mixing some modern electronic music. The B RUS has a beautiful tone and is incredibly resonant.
Are you frustrated by the need to choose between major and minor tonality? It’s like choosing between chocolate and vanilla ice-cream – almost impossible to do. The B RUS is a real game-changer as you can get two big scoops in the same cone! With the central note giving the minor feel and the bottom note giving the major feel, you can vary in tonality and vary the direction you are moving in your music compositions with this pentatonic drum. Changing the root note, you get a rich palette of patterns.
The usual problem of the handpans is that unlike piano it has a limited number of notes. That means that you need to take more drums to have a greater range of chords. The B RUS RAV Vast is like a small “piano” in a handpan world that gives you an opportunity to let your musical dreams and ideas real.
For whom this scale will work
For a beginner
The B RUS is easy to learn and will be a good choice for a beginner just like the G Pygmy and D Major. The scale provides many options for a newbie to learn and keep on honing the skills after taking the first steps. The note sequence of the scale provides an opportunity to create a fine-sounding melody literally overnight even for the first-timers. The sound of this scale is able to make love the tongue drums even those who neither tried playing the handpan nor is a percussionist.
For a pro
Like a pair of jeans that can be a part of casual style, work or worn for a special occasion, the B RUS can easily transform from a solo instrument to a jam session participant. That’s why it’s called RAV universal scale.
The scale also suits any musician regardless of the mastery level.
It is believed that the handpans work better for professional players while the tongue drums are more for the beginners. However, it’s not actually the truth. It, of course, depends on the scale, but the tongue drum provides amazing opportunities for experienced musicians. What about the Hang drum VS RAV Vast B RUS? While comparing these two drums, Hang is obviously much harder to deal with, as it requires more practice and treatment. The B RUS does not require any additional tuning during its lifetime and still provides a lot of room to maneuver and create lovely melodies and patterns.
The B RUS is also just a great drum for the teaching sessions. If you give lessons to students, B RUS will be a perfect instrument to demonstrate to them the whole range of the abilities of a steel tongue drum.

I was confused about deciding which scale to choose to become my first RAV drum and my first musical instrument. Never played anything before. I was choosing between the D Major and the B RUS as these two scales are both marked as suitable for beginners in the RAV’s store. In the end, I gravitated towards the B RUS to become my first RAV Vast, and I should say it’s a really great instrument for a newbie. Big thanks to customer support for helping to decide! I like the ease of manipulation of the notes - and I get a good melody in any case. It’s a super perk for me as I was always afraid to start learning music because of the fear to play off key and create noise instead of melodies. Highly recommend it for anyone who starts learning music for the first time in life like me! |

I am a handpan player and I’ve been searching for some sweet-n-easy scale to unwind between the handpan sessions and maybe add some interesting tones to my handpan music. The B RUS scale is just a piece of cake for a handpan musician. My handpan is tuned in B Celtic and it can be challenging sometimes as it requires thinking ahead which note you will play next. With the B RUS there’s no need for that. All the progressions sound harmonious. It’s a godsend after looking for harmonious progressions with a handpan (especially if it’s a bad day and you fail to find the good ones). I also wanted to take a scale tuned in B like my handpan two practice two-hands play - the RAV Vast and the handpan simultaneously. |

I thought I would be spending weeks for choosing which RAV Vast to buy. All the scales were so great, it was hard to choose only one. Thankfully there’s a RAV Virtual player where you can try to play all the scales one by one and decide on the sound you like the most. I instantly fell in love with the B RUS. And I was happy to find out afterwards that this scale provides some flexibility in sound. A great piece of news for those like me who never played any instrument before and don’t know which playing style and sound I prefer haha! It also resulted to be slightly cheaper than an average RAV Vast and was a nice bonus too! |

The whole process from selection to delivery is excellently supported by the Rav team.
The instrument itself is a wonderful experience while playing it, admiring it and listening to it. Have in mind that all the instructions when it comes to choosing a Rav are more or less subjective and hard to put accurately into words. So, listen as many different types of scales and ways of playing and try to answer the question what would you like to do most of the time on your Rav. |

I just received my Rav drum in the mail and was blown away by the quality and craftsmanship of this beautiful instrument. Due to Covid, shipping was quite delayed but it was well worth the wait. I can't wait to learn how to play it! Thank you!

I have already gotten a Rav Vast B Kurd previously and wanted to get something with a similar broad range that went well with the Kurd and after listening and playing the virtual player i came across the Rus and instantly fell in love with it and upon getting it I can only say that it fullfilled my expectations and more. Besides being a very easy scale to play with as all the notes match (and i do mean any combination) it also has a versaatile range resultion in very unique sound patterns and can go from peaceful to melancholy in seconds. i would honetly recomend this as a starter as any other Rav you get will match with this and it also matcheswell with normal instruments and alows for all styles of play. Thanks for making such amazing instruments Guys!

Before I get started, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to youtube. Check out Ricky Hillson's channel REWILDYOURSOUL. His videos are fantastic for anyone looking to get into RAV, or anyone who already plays RAV.
This is my first RAV drum and it won't be my last. It took one week from Russia to USA, that's fast! The RAV was well packed, arrived flawless. Its ready to play right out of the box. I've played a lot of RAV'S thanks to Ricky Hillson. Every RAV I've played is top notch quality. I feel RAV is the BEST OF THE BEST tongue drum. It's built like a tank, RAV is made to last. The sustain is just right. I've been playing guitar for 24yrs & drums for 14yrs. I came to this instrument with a short learning curve. Its really easy to learn for experienced musicians and even for a total beginner with no musical experience will see results relatively quick, but it will take time to master. For my own I style I mostly play slow relaxing melodic style, this is the perfect drum for me. However this model has tons of range and versatility. Ok let's get to the price, is it worth it? Yes. I bought a drum from GUDA $584 its good, but its not great. After playing RAV I don't want the GUDA drum anymore. RAV its PRO quality which will instantly improve your playing. I played RAV at my local open mic, I know first hand the power of RAV. I was met with a decent applause. I am impressed with RAV quality, customer service, and RAV performance. Thank you so much RAV drums, I will be back! I hope my review helps someone out there. Stay well :) |
